HISTORY AND DEMOGRAPHIC SIZE

It bore the name "Ciudad Trujillo" from 1936 to 1961

-It is currently the most important metropolis in the Dominican Republic.

-Its first settlers were the Taíno aborigines, who called the island Quisqueya and Haiti. Upon the arrival of Christopher Columbus it was baptized as Hispaniola.

-The first Spanish settlement dates back to the year 1493, despite the fact that it was officially founded on August 5, 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus under the name of La Nueva Isabela.

-Over time it would be called "Santo Domingo", in honor of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, who was the patron of Domenico Colombo, father of Christopher Columbus

-During its first century of existence it would be the platform for the American conquest. Destroyed by a hurricane in 1502

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Santo Domingo was founded in 1496 by Bartolomeu Colombus, brother of Christopher Colombus, as the capital of the first city site located on the left (east).

House: Houses in the Republic Dominican are categorized for their construction in their own land.

They are usually fenced, in order to delimit spaces with the neighborhood. These are preferred by most people looking for spacious and comfortable spaces.

Cabins: The cabins are usually located in rural areas and built with natural materials are the desired ones to go on vacation. The architectural design of these houses is not relevant, because their materials are enough to make them attractive.

Villas: The villas are the most attractive buildings in the Dominican Republic for tourists. A villa or vacation home has spacious and beautiful spaces. Usually located on the seashore, with recreational areas and spaces suitable for celebrations. They are a sample of the luxury architecture of the country.

GREEN CITY AND DIGITAL KIOSKS

Santo Domingo’s City Hall, in charge of regulating the heart of the country’s capital, is currently working on an ambitious project to plant hundreds of native trees along the city’s streets and avenues. Among the possible trees that will be planted in this "green" project are palms and other local varieties, known for their hospitality to local birds.

To date, more than 300 trees have been planted in the city. A small number indeed, if one takes into consideration that the project envisioned by City Hall entails the planting of 50 trees per one thousand inhabitants. Today, Santo Domingo is a bustling city with a population of more than one million.

DIGITAL KIOSKS:

Some of the most famous or most read newspapers in the city are Diario Libre, Lístin Diario or El Nuevo Diario
